Burg eltz hike

A trip to Germany is not complete without a stop at one of its castles. While the fairytale-like Schloss Neuschwanstein may be the popular choice for its likeness to the Disney castle, for those traveling without a car, Burg Eltz may be the easier choice for convenience. Located in Germany’s wine country of Mosel Valley between Koblenz and Cochem, it’s easily accessible by train and a short hike, or a shuttle bus if you prefer. Moreover, the castle is still owned by the same family since the 12th century, and being one of the few Bavarian castles not destroyed, it can serve as an authentic peek into medieval life.

Note that the castle is only open from April 1 through November 1 and requires an admission fee to enter, so be sure to plan accordingly. Visit their website for the latest details.

To get there, take the DB to Moselkern (you can purchase tickets online or at the train station), and follow the signage through town and past the quiet residential area at the foot of the mountain. It can take 20-30 minutes from the station depending on your walking speed to actually get to the trailhead.

The hike itself is fairly quick and easy, and may take you 30-40 minutes before the castle rises from the trees. Though there are some stairs toward the end, the trail itself is not very steep as it winds through the gentle foresty hills. We passed by a number of friendly hikers, mostly older couples, and it’s good etiquette to give a quick “hallo”.

To enter the castle you must pay the admission fee, which is only 12EU per adult and includes a guided tour (offered in English) and access to the treasury (a museum of artifacts). There’s a small restaurant inside serving fast food where you can enjoy a post-hike meal and beer (don’t forget to return your bottle to get the bottle deposit back) while enjoying the panoramic views.

There’s a gift shop inside as well, which mostly houses knight figurines and toy swords for children. If you’re like me, you’ll find the perfect souvenir in the custom Burg Eltz coaster that you can pick up at the restaurant with a beverage.

You might spend at least two hours in the castle if you enjoy all there is to offer. Be sure to keep an eye on train times, as it’s another hour back down and to the station.
